Weekly Report E5

The cover photo was taken when I was in school, passing by a small road and saw two kittens on the road. It feels more in line with the title - "Nothing happened this week, I seem to be waiting".

Life & Work#

In terms of life this week, to put it in a regular way, everything went as planned and nothing happened.

Originally, I had a meeting with a client, but it was postponed to next week. We also had a meeting during the week to summarize the issues, and we will do another small summary before the meeting with the client next week.

This week, I talked to Mr. Tang about critical illness insurance, which we both didn't know much about. I looked it up on Sunday night and found it to be quite complicated. I plan to investigate it further next week.

I tried to steam an egg with a steamer this week, but it seems that I put too little water, and it tasted a bit bad, hard. I will try to improve it next week. On Sunday, I saw a honey-pickled lemon that I made a month ago in the corner of the refrigerator. I planned to soak it in lemon water, but in the end, I soaked it in cereal. I will make a cup for myself on Monday and see how it tastes.

I spent a lot of time this week watching "In the Mood for Love". Overall, it's pretty good and it's a typical film and television drama in the style of Wong Kar-wai. In the new week, I will find time to write my thoughts on this TV drama.

As for exercise, I was a bit tired this week. I exercised for three days, which means I owe two days. Together with the three days I owed last week, I owe a total of one hour of exercise time. I will try to make up for it as much as possible this week.

Study#

I have completed all the exercises after class in CS50 this week. It's a bit regrettable that I still haven't done the final project. A large part of my free time this week was spent watching TV dramas. I will improve and delay my satisfaction in the future.

By the way, the final assignment of the last class of CS50 is very interesting, which is to output a PDF. I think it has a commemorative meaning for students, so I took a screenshot of the result of this assignment and put it above as a small memorial. I remember that Professor Weng Kai from Zhejiang University once said a paragraph that has always touched me:

"To learn computer science, you must have a very strong mental state. Everything in computer science is made by people; what others can think of, I can definitely think of. In computer science, there is no black magic; everything is just something I don't know yet; one day, I will understand all the details, all the internal things."

The conclusion of David from CS50 is also very touching, and I will share it below for everyone:

Ultimately then we hope with this course that you've not only learned Python, that you've not only learned programming, but you've really learned how to solve problems, and ultimately how to teach yourself new languages.

Funny enough, I myself only learned Python just a few years ago. And even though I certainly went through some formal documentation and resources online, I mostly learned what I know now and even what I had to learn again for today by just asking lots of questions, be it of Google, or friends, who are more versed in this language than I. And so, having that instinct, having that vocabulary which to ask questions of others to search for answers to questions, you absolutely now have enough of a foundation in Python and programming to go off and stand on your own. So you can certainly-- and you're welcome and encouraged to go on and take other courses in Python and programming specifically.

But better still, as quickly as you can, is to find some project that's personally of interest that uses Python or some other language. Because at least from my own experience, I tend to learn best and I hope you might too by actually applying these skills Not to problems in the classroom, but really truly to problems in the real world.

Tools#

  • Grabcad: A website for sharing 3D models. There are many freely downloadable 3D models on this website, and they regularly hold challenges. Recently, there was a NASA challenge called "Positive Connections: A Mechanism to Connect on Contact", which was particularly interesting. A very simple design won the challenge, which is well-deserved. Because of my personal background, my view on engineering, whether it's mechanical or computer, is that simple and functional designs are the best.
